LESSON 172

God is only Love, therefore, that is what I am.

1. W-153 “In my defenselessness my safety lies.” I

God is only Love, therefore, that is what I am.

2. W-154 “I am among the ministers of God.” II

God is only Love, therefore, that is what I am.

I When I do not defend myself, I feel strong and safe.

The idea that “in my defenselessness my safety lies” is not only counterintuitive—it is shocking to the ego’s thought system. Yet it is also the core of the undoing path the Course proposes. To defend oneself is to affirm that there is something external that can cause harm, and therefore that the Son of God is vulnerable, fragile, incomplete. All of that is false, and yet it is fiercely defended.

Defense is a declaration of faith in danger, a private ritual in which fear is confirmed as reality. But what seems like protection is in fact a prison. He who defends himself entrenches himself; and he who entrenches himself becomes isolated. True safety does not come from controlling the environment, but from remembering that there is no environment separate from the mind. Therefore, nothing can attack what has not first attacked itself.

To this is added a second powerful idea: “I give the miracles I have received.” Here the Course introduces a principle of spiritual circulation. The miracle is not retained; it is given. And in the giving, its presence in the giver is strengthened. It is a circuit of grace, not of accumulation. The miracle is not an object nor an achievement; it is a way of seeing that is preserved only to the extent that it is shared.

Taken together, this lesson proposes a radical shift of identity: to cease being the one who protects himself and become the one who trusts. To abandon the fear of loss and embrace the certainty of having already been made whole. The ego calls this madness. Jesus calls it salvation.

II I am very fortunate. I now know my Father’s Will, I live it within me, and I carry His Word to my brothers through my happiness.
