LESSON 289

The past is over. It cannot touch me.

1. Unless the past is gone from my mind, I cannot see the real world.

²For I am not truly looking at anything, but only seeing what is not there.I

³How, then, could I perceive the world that forgiveness offers me?

⁴The idea of the past was made to hide it, for that world can be seen only in the present.

⁵The real world has no past.

⁶For what is there to forgive except the past?

⁷And once it has been forgiven, the past is gone.

2. Father,

let me not look upon a past that does not exist.

²For You have offered me Your own replacement:

a present world the past has left untouched and free of sin.

³This is the end of guilt.

⁴And so I am made ready for the final step that You will take.

⁵How could I make You wait still longer for Your Son to find the loveliness You planned to be the end of all his dreams and every pain?

I The consideration of the past is the core of your mental illness. It is the mind’s effort to remember what no longer exists so that it may usurp the place and function of the present. It is an unnatural gesture that exacts a heavy price, for by resurrecting the corpse of the past you kill the newborn present. You murder the innocence of the instant and, in exchange, give artificial life to a guilty past.

Every memory always carries within it the notion of repetition—whether of what you desire or what you fear. And both desire and fear are, in the end, forms of suffering. Acknowledge it: we recall the past only out of dissatisfaction. The present, on the other hand, can fulfill you completely, because it is the only thing that is real. Everything else is illusion, and the sole purpose of illusion is to deceive you.

Forgiveness is the only perfect remedy against that perverse habit of indulging in what does not exist. And though it may be hard to accept, there is in you a dark pleasure in torturing yourself with fears and desires. You do not yet clearly distinguish pleasure from pain, and that is the source of your confusion.

The past no longer exists and has no effects, except when you make it live again through your fear or your wish to repeat it. And in doing so, you carry it on your back like a heavy pack. It is dead weight that drains your energy and conditions you. It not only wearies you; it also stands before your eyes and prevents you from seeing the present freely.

Understand, then, that all pain feeds on that burden you still choose to bear. If you insist on keeping it, it is because you ascribe to it a value it does not deserve. But like all stored clutter, sooner or later everything kept will end up in the trash. Why wait? Let it go now.

You may wonder what the real world is, the one this Course speaks of so often. It is very simple: it is a world without past, a world without guilt. And that is what forgiveness offers you—the possibility of walking lightly, free of burdens, seeing each instant without filters. The innocent present, released from the dead weight of the past, is the happy dream that precedes awakening.

Father, may I lay down the pack of the past today and behold the freedom of Your present world
