I Am Not a Body. I Am Free.
1. It is impossible to be free while you perceive yourself as a body.I
²The body is a limitation.
³One who seeks freedom in a body seeks it where it cannot be found.
⁴The mind can be set free when it no longer sees itself as bound and protected within a body.
⁵If this were so, the mind would indeed be vulnerable!
2. The mind that serves the Holy Spirit is forever unlimited in every way.
²It transcends the laws of time and space, is subject to no preconceptions, and holds the strength and power to do whatever is asked of it.
³Such a mind cannot harbor thoughts of attack, for it has given itself to the Source of Love, and fear can never enter a mind that has been joined to Love.
⁴This mind rests in God.
⁵What could one who lives in Innocence and only loves ever fear?
3. It is essential that you accept today’s idea in order to continue progressing in this Course, and that you keep it clearly in mind at all times.
²Do not be concerned if the ego regards it as madness.
³The ego holds the body in high regard, for it dwells in it and is attached to the home it invented.
⁴The body is part of the illusion that has helped to keep hidden the fact that the ego itself is illusion.
4. There it hides, and there it can be seen for what it is.
²Proclaim your innocence, and you will be free.
³The body disappears when it is no longer needed for any purpose other than the one the Holy Spirit sees in it.
⁴You will then see it as a useful form for what the mind must do.
⁵In this way, it becomes a vehicle that helps extend forgiveness to the universal goal that God’s plan has given it.
5. Embrace today’s idea and practice it today, and always.
²Make it a part of every practice you do.II
³With this idea, every thought you think increases its power to help the world and also brings you extraordinary rewards.
⁴With this idea, we send forth the call to freedom throughout the world.
⁵And how could you not share in what you give?
6. The Holy Spirit is the home of minds that seek freedom.
²In Him they find what they were searching for.
³The purpose of the body is now unambiguous.
⁴Its capacity to serve a single purpose becomes perfect.
⁵The body now serves perfectly its function, for it responds to the mind’s direction without conflict of any kind, and with the goal of freedom clearly in sight.
⁶And since it cannot enslave, it becomes a worthy servant of the freedom the mind that dwells in the Holy Spirit seeks.
7. Be free today.
²And give the gift of freedom to those who still believe they are enslaved within a body.
³Be free, so the Holy Spirit may use your release from bondage to free the many who see themselves as chained, defenseless, and afraid.
⁴Let Love replace their fears through you.
⁵Accept salvation now, and give your mind to Him Who calls you to make this gift.
⁶For He would grant you perfect freedom, perfect joy, and a hope fulfilled entirely in God.
8. You are the Son of God.
²You are forever immortal.III
³Do you not want to remember this?
⁴Then practice well the thought the Holy Spirit gives you for today.
⁵With it, your brothers are set free with you.
⁶The world is blessed along with you.
⁷And the Son of God shall weep no more.
⁸Heaven gives thanks to you for the joy your practice brings even to it.
⁹And God Himself extends His Love and Happiness each time you say:
¹⁰I am not a body.
¹¹I am free.
¹²I hear the Voice God gave me,
¹³And my mind obeys only Him.
I One thing is what you are, and quite another is what you believe yourself to be. Reconciling these two concepts is the purpose of thisCourse. And this lesson makes it clear: you are not a body. You are free. This is not a metaphor, nor a pleasant phrase. It is an affirmation of identity. A declaration of freedom. An explicit rejection of the ego’s most basic belief: “I am what I see.”
To believe is the intrinsic condition of the human mind, though the mind itself is not human. The mind of those who believe they are persons living in a world for a time was created by God in His image and likeness, and therefore that mind is like Him: infinite and eternal. But when that limitless mind entertains the idea of separation, it inevitably identifies with a fantasy of limitation and believes it inhabits a world of concrete, fleeting things foreign to itself. That is not true, but it is what that mind believes, and for it, it is real.
The body is one of those things the mind dreams. It is one of the elements of the imaginary universe that the mind has projected and then confused with something real. And because it has made a great investment in that idea, the body becomes a constant source of worry, defense, pain, and pride. But it is nothing more than that: an idea, a belief sustained by the mind—like a puppeteer who forgets he is pulling the strings and becomes moved by the play.
To say “I am not a body” is not to despise the body, but to forgive it. It is to stop burdening it with an importance it does not have. It is to treat it with the detachment of one who knows that the vehicle is not the traveler—that the body is only a means, not an end. And that, as long as it serves the Holy Spirit’s purpose, it will be functional, sufficient, and useful… until it no longer is.
This Course offers you this idea—“I am not a body”—as one of its most powerful tools. Not because it denies your experience, but because it seeks to teach you how to reinterpret it. The body is not a prison because it has bars; it is a prison because you believe you are it—because you have mistaken it for yourself. And that confusion is the root of all limitation.
But you can choose again. You can see your body for what it is: a symbolic resource, a temporary channel of expression in service of something higher. And, above all, you can begin to disidentify from it—without hatred, without struggle, without disdain. With tenderness. With gratitude. Like one who thanks an old car that has carried him this far, but is no longer his home.
“I am not a body, I am free” is a phrase repeated twelve times a day during this section of the Course. And this is not due to mechanical insistence, but to vital necessity. Because each time you repeat this phrase, you are withdrawing power from the ego. You are loosening the prison. You are remembering that your Self is not fragile, nor finite, nor conditioned by time. You are remembering that you are as God created you.
And then the unexpected happens: your body begins to lose its centrality. You stop thinking about it so much—not because you deny it, but because you no longer need it to know who you are. And that—this loving disidentification—is true freedom. For no one who knows he is free defines himself by his limits. And you were not created to be limited.
II Two days from now, the Sixth Review will instruct us to do precisely this for twenty days.
III Today’s idea denies error, but, as the Text aptly says, true learning cannot be built solely upon negative concepts. You may find it helpful to review Lesson 97, which is the counterpart of today’s Lesson.
