LESSON 198

Only My Own Condemnation Can Hurt Me.

1. To suffer harm is impossible.

²Yet illusions give rise to illusions.

³If you can condemn, then you can also be harmed.

⁴For you have believed that you can cause harm, and the right you have granted yourself may now be used against you—unless you relinquish it, seeing it as worthless, undesired, and unreal.

⁵Then the illusion ceases to have effects, and everything it seemed to offer dissolves into nothing.

⁶And now you are free, for you receive the freedom you have given.

2. Condemn, and you become a prisoner.

²Forgive, and you are set free.I

³This is the law that governs perception.

⁴It is not a law understood by knowledge, for freedom is a part of it.

⁵Therefore, condemnation is truly impossible.

⁶Its power and its effects have never existed at all.

⁷Yet we must deal with them for a while as though they had occurred.II

⁸Illusions give rise to illusions.

⁹All but one.

¹⁰Forgiveness is the illusion that answers all the rest.

3. Forgiveness undoes all other illusions, and although it is itself but a dream, it is an illusion that does not breed more dreams.

²Every illusion but this one multiplies endlessly.

³But with forgiveness, all illusions end.

⁴Forgiveness is the end of dreams because it is a lucid dream.

⁵It is not the truth itself.

⁶But it points to where the truth lies, and leads with the certainty of God Himself.

⁷It is a dream in which the Son of God awakens to his Self and to his Father, knowing They are One.

4. Forgiveness is the only path out of disaster, out of suffering, and ultimately out of death.

²How could there be another way, when this is God’s plan?

³And why would you oppose it, attack it, and search for a thousand ways to prove it must be wrong, and that there could be a thousand other alternatives?

5. Is it not wiser to rejoice that you hold in your hands the answer to all your problems?

²Is it not more intelligent to give thanks to Him Who offers salvation, and to accept His Gift in gratitude?

³And is it not a kindness to yourself to listen to His Voice and learn the simple lessons He would teach, instead of trying to ignore His Words and replace them with your own?

6. His Words will work.

²His Words will save.

³His Words contain all the hope, all the blessings, and all the joy that can be found on this earth.

⁴His Words come from God and reach you with Heaven’s Love upon them.

⁵Those who hear His Words have heard the song of Heaven, for these are the words in which all others finally are made one.

⁶And when the last word fades away, the Word of God will take its place, for it will then be remembered and loved.

7. This world has many hiding places that seem to differ, where mercy has no meaning and attack appears justified.

²Yet all are the same: a place where death is offered to the Son of God and to his Father.

³You may think They have accepted it, but if you look again at the place where you thought you saw Their blood, you will instead perceive a miracle.

⁴How absurd it is to believe that They could die!

⁵How insane it is to think that you could attack!

⁶How mad to think that you could be condemned, and that the holy Son of God could die!

8. The stillness of your Self remains untouched by such thoughts, and knows nothing of any condemnation that might require forgiveness.

²Every dream is foreign to the truth, no matter what its form.

³Yet what else but Truth could have a Thought that builds a bridge that brings illusions to the truth?

9. In our practice today, we let freedom come to make its home in you.

²Truth gives these words to your mind so you may find the key to light and let the darkness end:

³Only my own condemnation can hurt me.

Only my own forgiveness sets me free.

⁵Do not forget today that all suffering hides a lack of forgiveness.III

⁶And that there is no kind of pain that forgiveness cannot heal.IV

10. Accept the one illusion that proclaims the Son of God cannot condemn, and you will remember Heaven instantly; you will forget the world and, with it, all its strange beliefs, and the Face of Christ will finally be revealed within this single dream.

²This is the gift the Holy Spirit offers you from God, your Father.

³Let today be celebrated both on earth and in your holy home.

⁴Be gentle with both, and as you forgive the offenses you thought they had committed, you will see your innocence shine upon you from the Face of Christ.V

11. Now a silence covers the world.

²Now there is stillness where once there was a frantic whirl of senseless thoughts.

³Now a quiet light shines upon the face of the earth, which rests in peace, sleeping without dreams.

⁴And now the only thing remaining upon it is the Word of God.

⁵Only that can be perceived a moment longer.

⁶And then all symbols end, and everything you thought you made fades completely from the mind that God has always known as His only Son.

12. He does not condemn.

²He is perfect in His Holiness.

³He has no need of thoughts of mercy.

⁴What could be given to Him when all is already His?

⁵And who could even dream of offering forgiveness to the very Son of Perfect Innocence Himself—so like the One of Whom He is the Son, that to behold the Son is to cease perceiving and to know only the Father?

⁶In this vision of the Son, so fleeting that not a moment stands between the simple sight and timelessness itself, you see yourself—and then you disappear forever into God.

13. Today we draw still closer to the end of all that yet stands between this vision and what we now behold.

²We are grateful to have come so far, and we recognize that He Who brought us here will not abandon us now.

³For He would give us the gift that God has given through Him today.

⁴This is the moment of your liberation.

⁵That moment has come.

⁶It has come today.

I Matthew 6:12 “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”

This lesson directly reinforces the two preceding ones. It is, in essence, a powerful reaffirmation of what Jesus never tires of telling you: no one harms you. Only you. No one can crucify, judge, or punish you without your consent. The root of all suffering lies in your decision to condemn. And because you choose to condemn, you receive what you give. But you can choose again.

To suffer harm is impossible, Jesus declares—and He means it literally. Yet illusions produce illusions, and if you can condemn, you can also suffer harm, because you have accepted harm as possible. You have believed that you can attack, that you have the right to judge… and that “right” haunts you. You use it against yourself without realizing it.

Here you are not asked to believe blindly. Jesus invites you to verify it for yourself: observe the effects that condemnation has on you. See what happens in your mind when you judge, when you insist on being right, when you nurture resentments. Notice the knot in your stomach, the tightness in your chest, the bitterness that settles in. You do not need blind faith—you need honesty. Just look. Nothing more.

This lesson gives you back your power with brutal clarity: what you experience does not depend on others, but on your inner choices. Condemn, and you become a prisoner. Forgive, and you are set free. There is no middle ground. That is the law that governs perception. And no matter how much your ego protests, it cannot change that law.

That is why this Course insists so strongly on mental vigilance. It is not moralism. It is spiritual hygiene. It is not about being “good,” but about being free—about ceasing to punish yourself with thoughts that generate nothing but suffering. No one else can save you from that. Only you.

And if you understand this idea, even a little, you will discover a new kind of power: the ability to free the world simply by ceasing to condemn it. And in doing so, you free yourself. For it was never others you wanted to punish. It was always yourself. Only now you can choose otherwise.

II This is a very simpleCourse that deals with and describes two distinct and opposing realms: one is real, and the other is illusory—a kind of dream.

The Course is addressed to the characters who believe they live in that dream, where everything is illusion, including themselves. Yet the one who dreams the dream—you—is real. The dreamer of the dream—you—has identified with the characters he dreams, for his mind is apparently fragmented, and his imagination contemplates countless forms, all of which are contained within it, as could not be otherwise.

That dream is “inspired” by a single thought: the idea that the mind that dreams is separate from its natural condition, which is its Source and its Self. Thus, the infinite and unlimited mind has shrunk itself infinitely, focusing exclusively on a single idea: self-awareness.

Now that mind has become a unique frame of reference, and everything it conceives it perceives as external to itself. Thus, what is actually everything becomes a “character” living in a world conceived by a mind that does not know it has projected it.

This Course is addressed to that character with the intention of restoring his true identity, and this process is called salvation.

The word salvation sounds fine, but it must be acknowledged that it is somewhat misleading, because it gives the impression that there is something dangerous from which one must be saved. This is both true and false, for, as you can understand, this character needs only to be saved from his own beliefs.

Students of this Course—characters within the dream—find it difficult to recognize that everything they perceive is an illusion, even the idea they have of themselves, for that notion of being a self is an impossible, absurd idea. The salvation of these characters is nothing but the “awakening” of the mind that conceived them.

The strategy this Course follows is the “sanctification” of the dream’s characters, for by returning them to the natural condition of the mind that dreams them, the mind itself awakens, and both the characters and the world they perceive disappear.

That process is what the Course calls the Atonement, and the procedure itself is what it calls God’s plan for salvation.

Awakening would be very easy if the characters were not so strongly attached to the notion of “being themselves,” which is precisely what the idea of separation encourages. This conception of personal identity is fueled and sustained by a strong sense of self-importance.

The result is a complex scaffolding of lies and falsehoods that forms an illusory but believable reality, for it is the product of belief. The only way to undo a belief is to stop believing in it—and to do that, you must cease to value it.

Only then does it become possible to let it go, thus freeing the mind from the chains that bound it to that entirely voluntary and cherished belief. This process of un-believing is what the Course calls forgiving.

Obviously, what the mind forgives are the fantasies it has conceived and with which it dreams. That is why the Course insists so often on “not being deceived by the world,” on not “falling into temptation,” on not “attacking,” and in many similar expressions which, in the end, are nothing more than becoming aware that everything that seems to happen is nothing but a dream.

If you become aware of the symbolic nature of the Course’s language, and how it simply points you to the obvious, you will find it easier to learn. Understand that the determining factor in your attachment to this dream is the importance you assign to everything—to the good and to the bad alike.

You would do well to start familiarizing yourself with the idea that the good is simply obvious, and the bad, ridiculous. If you did not assign so much importance to everything, your fear would diminish, and it would be much easier to elude illusions.

Nothing in this world is important, because nothing is real—beginning with the idea you have of yourself. That idea should not seem important or worthy of being valued and protected, because it is false. For that very reason, you have no need to protect it.

What you are is real, and therefore you do not need protection either, for it is inconceivable that anything could threaten your reality. That is the key to escaping fear forever.

If you manage to let go, even a little, of your own sense of personal importance, and stop thinking that your character is important, you will see that everything you perceive will cease to have value for you—without your needing to do anything to achieve it. Forgiveness will become natural and easy, and you will not assign importance to that either. Then you will see that nothing will frighten you, and you will look upon the world from a different perspective.

And as you cease to fear, you will become inclined to love—and you will not make that important either, for you will begin to see it as the most natural thing in the world. And without realizing it, and without any effort, you will find yourself happy.

III W-193.9:2-3 “Does the pain you perceive seem real? If so, be sure that you have not learned the Lesson, and that something still hidden in your mind has not been forgiven.”

IV W-193.7:1-2 “Forgive, and you will see this differently. These are the words the Holy Spirit speaks in all your tribulations, in all your pain, and in all your suffering.”

V Mark 11:25 “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father who is in Heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.”
