I crucify myself alone.
1. When you have truly understood this and hold it firmly in your awareness, you will no longer try to harm yourself, nor turn your body into a slave of vengeance.
²You will no longer attack yourself, and you will recognize that to attack another is only to attack yourself.
³You will free yourself from the insane belief that attacking a brother benefits you.
⁴And you will understand that his safety is your own, and that when he is healed, you are healed as well.I
2. At first, you may not understand how it is possible to find mercy—unlimited and protecting all things—in the idea we practice today.
²In fact, it may seem that this idea states that there is no escape from punishment, for the ego rushes to quote truth in defense of its lies against anything it perceives as a threat.II
³But it cannot understand the truth it uses.
⁴You, however, can learn to recognize these senseless tactics and deny the meaning they seem to hold.
3. In doing so, you also teach your mind that you are not an ego.
²For the forms the ego uses to distort the truth will no longer deceive you.
³You will no longer believe that you are a body that must be crucified.
⁴And within today’s idea you will see the light of resurrection shining, as you look beyond all thoughts of crucifixion and death to those of liberation and life.
4. Today’s idea is a step that leads us from bondage to a state of perfect freedom.
²Take this step today so you may move more quickly along the path of salvation, and proceed in the sequence set before you, that the mind may lay down its burdens one by one.
³This requires no time.
⁴It only requires willingness.
⁵For what would seem to take a thousand years can be done easily in a single instant by the Grace of God.III
5. The grim and joyless thought that you can attack others and escape your own attack is what has nailed you to the cross.
²Perhaps it seemed that this was salvation.
³But it was only the expression of the belief that the fear of God is real.IV
⁴And what is that, if not hell?
⁵Who could believe that his Father is his mortal enemy, who has abandoned him and will destroy his life and erase him from the universe, without feeling the fear of hell in his heart?
6. This is the madness you believe if you accept the dreadful thought that you can attack another without it affecting you.
²Until you change this way of thinking, there is no hope.
³Until you come at least to see this, hope will be impossible.
⁴How could there be any escape?
⁵The fear of God is entirely real to those who believe this thought is true.
⁶They will not see its madness, nor will they even notice it long enough to question it.V
7. Even to question it, you must change its form, so that fear of retaliation may lessen and responsibility may return to you in some small measure.
²From there, you may at least consider whether you wish to continue along this painful path.
³Until you have made this change, you will not realize that it is only your thoughts that frighten you, and that your release depends on you.
8. If today you make that choice, the steps that follow will be easy.
²And from there you will advance quickly.
³For once you understand that nothing but your own thoughts can harm you, the fear of God will disappear.VI
⁴You will no longer believe that the cause of fear lies outside yourself.
⁵And you will welcome God once more into the holy mind He never left, the God you thought you had cast away.
9. The song of salvation can surely be heard in the idea we practice today.
²If it is only yourself you crucify, it means you have done nothing to the world; therefore, you have nothing to fear from its vengeance or retaliation.
³Nor need you hide in terror from the mortal fear of God that projection conceals behind itself.
10. What you fear most is your salvation.
²You are strong, and it is strength that you desire.
³You are free, and you rejoice in your freedom.
⁴But you have sought to be weak and captive, because you were afraid of your strength and freedom.
⁵Yet in them lies your salvation.
11. There is a moment when terror seems to seize your mind so completely that there appears to be not the slightest hope of escape.
²Once you realize that it is truly yourself you fear, the mind sees itself as divided.
³This had been hidden while you believed that attack could be directed outward, and that it then returned to you from outside.
⁴It seemed there was an external enemy you had to fear.
⁵Thus, a god outside yourself became your mortal enemy and the source of fear.
12. Now, for an instant, you perceive a murderer within you, longing for your death, plotting your punishment until the moment he can finally destroy you.
²Yet it is also in that instant that salvation comes.
³For the fear of God is gone.
⁴And you can call upon Him to save you from illusions through His Love, calling Him Father, and calling yourself His Son.
⁵Pray that this instant come to you soon—today, if possible.
⁶Step away from fear and toward Love.
13. There is not a single Thought of God that does not go with you to help you reach that instant, and to go beyond it swiftly, in certainty and forever.
²When the fear of God has disappeared, there is no obstacle between you and the holy Peace of God.
³How kind and merciful is the idea we practice today.
⁴Receive it gladly, for it is your release.
⁵Indeed, it is yourself your mind seeks to crucify.
⁶But your redemption will also come from you.
I If you truly understood this lesson—and kept it firmly in your awareness—you would stop hurting yourself. You would not only stop attacking others; you would stop attacking yourself. For this is the radical truth theCourse hurls at you without anesthesia: every attack thought, every judgment, every resentment you harbor does not wound the other—it crucifies you.
And yet we remain oblivious to such a crucial issue. We wander through life so distracted that we are unaware of the direct effect our thoughts have on us. We keep believing that thinking ill is harmless, that a negative thought is something internal, isolated, that at most it affects the atmosphere. False! A negative thought robs you of peace. It robs you. Not the other. Is it really so hard to see?
Have you stopped to notice how you feel right after indulging in criticism? How your heart closes, how your body tightens, how your mind clouds over? That is the price! And you are paying it. It makes no difference what the other has done. It makes no difference whether the other deserves your understanding or not. This is not about the other. It is about you—about your mind, your health, your freedom. It is about ceasing to mistreat yourself.
And no, you don’t need a special diet, or a fasting routine, or ideal external conditions. The mind can be at peace after a ham sandwich, and it can be in chaos after eleven days of abstinence. What matters is your mental decision. Fasting can be useful, of course, but not because the body matters. The body does not exist. Fasting is not real. What matters is what it represents: a symbol, a mental decision for purification, for renunciation, for clarity. That is real. That does affect you.
Your mind is all there is. And everything that occurs in it has effects. There are no neutral thoughts. None. And the first place where those effects are felt… is in you. That is why this lesson is not a moralistic admonition nor a spiritual metaphor: it is a radical warning. Every time you judge, you hurt yourself. Every time you attack, you crucify yourself.
If you understood this, you would begin to watch your mind with the same care you would give a wounded child. You would not let a single destructive thought pass without observing it, questioning it, choosing again. For you would know that your peace—and only your peace—is at stake. This is your battlefield. This is your only responsibility.
And the beauty of it is that you need not change the world, your partner, your children, or your coworkers. You need only observe your mind, see what you are choosing, and recognize that every pain you experience comes from there. From there alone.
Today’s lesson is simple, yet definitive: stop hurting yourself. Watch your thoughts as if your life depended on it. Because it does. And not because you might die, but because you can truly live. You can live in peace. You can live free. But only if you stop crucifying yourself.
II William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice: “The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.” (See also T-5.XI.2:3.) Here, the ego interprets: “My attacks upon my brothers will condemn me forever to crucifixion as God’s punishment for those attacks.” And, of course, that is not the sense in which you should understand today’s idea. Remember, the ego delights in being punished.
III 2 Peter 3:8 “But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”
IV Remember that the ego has a tendency to project its own attributes onto God. The ego perceives sin in others and punishes them with its attack; therefore, it also believes that God will pursue and punish it—you—for its own sins. Do not feed your guilt with such madness; recognize that it is only a projection of your ego and, like all its perceptions, a crude lie. God loves you; He created you perfect by extending His Love, and He knows that you could never sin, except in the arrogance of your illusions. The fear of God is utterly unjustified.
V You allow yourself to harbor countless depressing thoughts without ever questioning whether they are true. You pay no attention to them because they are the “normal” way everyone thinks, and perhaps for that reason you take them as true. Ask yourself: do they make you happy? Are those who think this way happy? If not, you can be sure that the thoughts which have induced such a state of mind are false. The voice of your ego certainly reaches your mind, but it cannot touch your heart.
Your ego confuses your mind, but your heart cannot be deceived. It is essential that you always remember: if you do not feel good, if you are not happy, if you are sad, worried, or depressed, it is because what you are thinking is not true. Then disconnect your mind, clear out everything within it, ask for guidance, and wait in peace. You will know that your mind is functioning properly when your heart feels joyful and your mind is at peace; that is the only valid criterion for using the mind rightly.
Begin to familiarize yourself with the idea that nothing you think is strictly true. Truth cannot be confined within concrete and specific thoughts, nor formulated in words, because truth is exactly what you are; there is no better definition of truth than that. Truth is your Self. Realize how far removed the thoughts that inhabit your mind are from truth—even the most exalted ones. No thought will ever do justice to what you are, and most of them are in perfect contradiction to your reality. That is why you will never reach truth by thinking, but by ceasing to think. The mind is the home the ego has usurped, and you will never drive it out through reasoning—for the ego loves to argue. Yet it cannot reach your heart; therefore, the heart is a sure guide and a faithful indicator of the ego’s stratagems within your mind.
That is something the ego knows perfectly well, and that is why it does everything possible to distract you from your heart and prevent you from becoming aware of your feelings. And if it succeeds, it will try to confuse you, to appropriate them and interpret them in its own way, giving you a thousand explanations for why you feel as you do.
It is all a lie. Do not listen. Instead, stop, pray, and listen within your mind. The Holy Spirit will induce truth in you if you ask with your heart and without control. Ask with honesty. Do not impose the conditions of the answer yourself, and trust completely that you will receive it.
VI This is the central idea of today’s Lesson: if you believe you can gain something by attacking others, you are in fact punishing yourself, for it will be inevitable that you also think God will punish you for your sins. Notice that the mind is a hermetically sealed thought system; nothing can leave it, and you cannot rid yourself of your own thoughts. This is not because the mind is confined within a physical space, but quite the opposite: the mind is unlimited and infinite, and there is nothing that is not itself. But because it is fragmented and incapable of conceiving absolute concepts, you can interpret it as though it were inside a box, living always with its own thoughts. The result is the same.
The mind—or, if you prefer, the conception of reality as a mind—is a total ecosystem. This means it is complete, whole, and one. Only what is real exists: that which truly is you, God, or whatever name you wish to give it. Reality is undifferentiated, unlimited, and timeless, but the mind that dreams of separation cannot conceive it, because it contradicts the idea that mind has of itself. In the mind’s dream, nothing is real; thus, reality can only be described in negative terms, which is paradoxical, for reality is intrinsically positive, yet the frame of reference that perceives it is its exact opposite.
Therefore, everything you give, you give first to yourself. Today’s Lesson is but a specific example of this principle: every punishment is self-punishment; you crucify only yourself.
When you recognize that it is only your own attack thoughts that have been crucifying you, you will also realize that God has not done so—and you will no longer fear Him. Are you aware of the powerful liberating effect of this truth?
