8. What is the Real World? and LESSON 29

8. What is the Real World?

1. The real world is a symbol, like everything perception offers.

²Yet it represents the opposite of what you made.

³You see the world through the eyes of fear, which bring witnesses of terror to your mind.I

⁴The real world can only be perceived through eyes blessed by forgiveness, and these see a world where terror is impossible and no witness to fear can be found.

2. The real world offers a counterpart to every unhappy thought your world reflects; a sure correction for the images of fear and the sounds of conflict that fill your world.

²The real world shows you a world seen differently, through quiet eyes and a mind at peace.

³Here, there is only rest.

⁴No cries of pain are heard, and no mourning, for forgiveness embraces everything here.

⁵And the landscapes are gentle.

⁶Only joyful sights and sounds can reach a mind that has forgiven itself.

3. What need has such a mind for thoughts of death, of attack, and of killing?

²What can it perceive around it but safety, Love, and joy?

³What could it condemn, or even judge?

⁴That world arises from a mind at peace with itself.

⁵No danger lurks in anything it sees, for that mind is kind, and it sees only kindness.

4. The real world is the symbol that the dream of sin and guilt is over, and that the Son of God is no longer asleep.

²His open eyes behold the unmistakable reflection of his Father’s Love; the sure promise that he is redeemed.

³The real world marks the end of time, for when it is perceived, time ceases to have meaning.

5. The Holy Spirit has no need of time once it has served His purpose.

²Now He waits but one more instant, that God may take the final step.

³Then time disappears, taking with it perception, and leaving only Truth to be what it is.

⁴That instant is our goal, for in it lies the memory of God.

⁵And as we look upon a forgiven world, it is He Who calls to us and comes to lead us home, reminding us of the Identity our forgiveness has restored.

I Remember always that this world is a dream. Never forget it. Do not be deceived by its appearances—you are dreaming. Nothing you perceive is real. You have forgotten who you are and you dream of strange things.

The world you see is a dream; the bodies you perceive, your sensations, your ideas—all are dreams; and your identity itself is but a dream. Yet when you become aware that you are truly dreaming, that dream becomes a lucid dream that no longer affects you and that you no longer fear. You have lost your fear; now you know that nothing you see outside yourself is real, and that the “you” you thought you were is nothing but a delusion.

Even so, you cannot awaken. Your identification with the character you play is so strong that you cannot open your eyes by your own means. And do you know why? Because what you understand as “your own means” is also a dream—just as the character who pretends to awaken is a dream. How could one of the symbols of the dream awaken from the dream? How could that little “you,” which is merely an illusion of limitation, awaken? What would it become? What other dream would it want to have? Do you think you are that character? For now, yes.

That character you believe yourself to be is not real: he does not dream—he is being dreamed by you, the Son of God. That character is not the cause of anything; he is an effect. That character has no thoughts of his own, no will, nothing at all, because he does not exist. You, the Son of God, do.

In this Course, Jesus—one of the characters in your dream—teaches you to prepare to awaken other characters in your dream, who are also you, for there is nothing that is not you. Why do you think the  Text says that everything you give you give to yourself, or that your brother and you are one?

Thus you, the Son of God, awaken through the characters in your dream—who sometimes seem to be in conflict and miserable, and at other times peaceful and happy—but all of this is only your dream, Son of God. You fragment your identity and scatter it into a fantasy containing a myriad of different identities, yet you are always you, the eternal Son of God, forever in your Father, One with Him.

Now, in this Course that you, the Son of God, are taking, do not deceive yourself. Realize that it is nothing but a dream filled with symbols that will resonate within you according to how you interpret them. They have emanated from your mind; therefore, they are holy and pure, as you are. So do not attribute any guilt to them, for in themselves they have none. And when you forgive them—that is, when you forgive yourself—you will begin to see the dream through the eyes of Christ, which is your true vision, the vision of your one Identity in the many. And what you will behold will fill you with joy, for you will be seeing Happiness Itself—you will be seeing yourself, for what else is there to see?

Ask yourself this, Son of God: if the world you behold is a dream, why should it interest you? And if it interests you, how will you awaken from it? Your worldly interests are the only thing that hold you back and prevent you from becoming aware of your true Identity. Perhaps you tell yourself a thousand times that you want to awaken, to be enlightened, to go to Heaven and be one with God—but is that true? Is that the only thing you want? Do you not also desire many other things?

To forgive truly means to abandon once and for all every grievance, every resentment, all guilt—your own and others’—but also every desire for the things of this world. And though you may be willing to let go of what you perceive as bad and painful, you are not so eager to release what you still value here.

Think carefully: if you truly accept that the world is a dream, that the world is not real, you will become unreachable by what once caused you pain—but also by what once attracted you. You will have released the chains that bound you and will be ready to return to your true Home. That depends only on you, and it will happen in your mind, where everything seems to happen.

Be honest. Realize that everything depends on you; your will is always fulfilled. You have the life you grant yourself, and you see the world you wish to see. How could it be otherwise, Son of God? Do not worry or grieve over your present condition; simply take responsibility for it and choose rightly. Trust yourself, trust Jesus, and trust God. Ask for help—not for good things to happen to you, but to want only good things to happen, because you recognize that, for now, you do not desire only that. Honesty is the first step toward your liberation, for it is an invitation to truth. And then truth will come to you, and you will realize how easy it is to see the real world through the eyes of Christ.

Here it is helpful to remember the difference between the pessimist and the optimist. Both behold the same reality, but they interpret it differently. The pessimist fixes his attention on the darkness and lets himself be carried away by it. The optimist chooses to focus on the light, however small, and celebrates it. Well then, the real world begins with that choice: to seek and value what is luminous, loving, and true in all that you see. And a single spark of love in the midst of darkness is enough to transform your vision completely.

The real world is not a distant goal—it is here and now, in your willingness to look with gratitude. Your will is decisive: what do you want to see, the shadow or the light? If you choose what is good, beautiful, and loving, you are already perceiving with the eyes of the Christ within you.

Father, may I choose today to look with gratitude and see only the light of Your Love in all that I behold.

LESSON 291

This is a day of peace and stillness.

1. Today the vision of Christ looks upon all things through me.I

²His vision shows me all things forgiven and at peace, and this same vision He offers to the world.

³And I accept this vision in His Name, both for myself and for the world.

⁴How much beauty we behold today!

⁵How much holiness we see surrounding us!

⁶And we can recognize that we, too, share in it,

⁷for it is the Holiness of God Himself.

2. Father,

today I still my mind to receive the Thoughts You offer me.

²And I accept what comes from You instead of what comes from me.

³I do not know the way to You.

⁴But You know it perfectly.

⁵Father,

lead Your Son on the quiet path that leads to You.

⁶Let my forgiveness be complete,

and let Your memory return to me.

I Today pay special attention to quieting your mind and stopping your thoughts. Stop thinking—or rather, stop chattering with yourself. Interrupt your inner dialogue as often as you can. To do so, you must first become aware of that mental noise, because ultimately what you are hearing means nothing—it is only noise.

Learn to let your mind rest and to appreciate and value silence. Only from stillness and mental peace will you see a happy and beautiful world, and whenever you see it, it will be because you are at peace with yourself. And this is so for the simple reason that the world you behold and your own mind are the same thing: you see only your mind, for there is nothing but your mind. And you will achieve this through your will—what else could accomplish it? It is through your will that you achieve everything.

Today, will peace, and you will have it. Look upon everything differently: see it without judgment, without expectations, with innocence and curiosity. Behold it as if it were the first time you have ever seen it, for in truth it is—the same as you, who have just been born now into the eternal present. Be generous and magnanimous: give to what you behold, and to yourself, the opportunity to surprise you with the perfection they represent. What you see is perfect—and so are you. Everything that occurs before you happens in the perfect place, at the perfect time, and in the perfect way to offer you the Peace of God and the joy of Heaven.

It is not difficult to see the world this way, for you need do nothing to achieve it. What may seem difficult, in fact, is precisely doing nothing. Funny, isn’t it?

The commentary sheds even more light on this lesson: we believe we see an objective world, full of external things, but in truth all we ever behold are the meanings we ourselves have given them. That personal world is a mental construction. Imagine visiting a friend’s home and seeing a painting in the entryway. To you, it is simply “a beautiful painting.” But if your friend, who loves art, begins to explain its details, its technique, and its history, that painting becomes something entirely different to you—you see it with new eyes. In just this way does the Holy Spirit work in your mind: He offers you new meanings, not only of an object, but of everything you perceive.

That is the real world: the total reinterpretation of all things through Love. Suddenly you look upon a blade of grass, a snail, a building, or even a person you once judged, and everything inspires in you unconditional love. Nothing has changed in form, yet everything has changed in meaning. That is what happens when you quiet your mind and let the Holy Spirit show you the vision of Christ.

Father, may it be my will today to quiet my mind and behold with Your vision, seeing in all things the peace and beauty of Your Love.
